Alphas, Betas, Previews and Releases
The OS/RX project has adopted both commonly used terms (Alpha, Beta and Release) and more specific "in-between" terms (Preview). This page describes these terms to clear up any confusion.
The OS/RX project has adopted both commonly used terms (Alpha, Beta and Release) and more specific "in-between" terms (Preview). This page describes these terms to clear up any confusion.
An "Alpha" of a software or version of OS/RX is in very early development, often full of bugs, unresolved issues and unimplemented features. Alpha builds are rare to be published, but every so often some public alpha tech tests will be released. Alphas are not intended to be installed onto real hardware and used as serious, ready-to-use operating systems.
A "Beta" of a software or version of OS/RX is still in-development, but most of the bigger issues found in Alphas have been addressed and resolved. Smaller and less significant bugs remain to be addressed and many features are still being developed. Betas are usually published to allow users and testers to have an early hands on experience and to spot issues on a much more vast hardware configuration. Betas are ready to be installed on real hardware but still have a few issues to be ironed out. Betas can be used as daily drivers but it's highly recommended to wait for a Preview to be released.
A "Preview" of a software or version of OS/RX is at the very end of development, all known bugs and issues have been addressed and the system is almost ready to be a Release. It's not quite a Release because some features aren't ready but it's not quite a Beta because it's as stable and daily-drivable as a Release build. As such the "Preview" term is used for anything between Beta status and Release status.Â
A "Release" of a software or version of OS/RX has completed it's development and is released to the public as a 100% complete. Before an OS/RX version reaches the "Release" state a few different Previews will be released, sometimes a few weeks before and sometimes a few months before.
